The Grand Budapest Hotel

I'm a bit late to the party on this one, but I just saw The Grand Budapest Hotel and it really is a marvel. So beautifully composed - the attention to detail is awe-inspiring. And it's laugh out loud funny, too.

The Fault in Our Stars

Last year I read John Green's The Fault in Our Stars and cried my eyes out. This film's going to be amazing.

Her

I recently saw Her and just fell in love with it - what a beautifully shot and made film. I haven't been able to get the soundtrack out of my head, either. Just beautiful.

Marcel The Shell with Shoes On...Returns!

You might remember my obsession with Marcel. Happily, he's back and ready to go with a second episode!

Midnight in Paris

I saw this film this week and just loved it. Just charming, simple, well-written and, well, kind of a fantasy of mine. Have you seen it? What did you think?

Love's Labour Lost

Ah, clever friends at it again. Enjoy this beautiful little film about love and unemployment :)

HP

The wonderful Caroline Hadilaksono made these beautiful Harry Potter-inspired vintage-style travel posters. How perfect for today - the Australian release of the film. I can hear the theme music now...

Animal Beat Box

I was lucky enough to get along to TropFest on Sunday night and loved this winning film (as well as spotting some famous people - hello Olivia Newton John, how are you today?!)

Thought you might enjoy this as much - the rest of the finalists are all up on YouTube, too.

What if 'Up' was made in 1960?

Well this is just plain adorable. I do love the film 'Up' so much, and this is wonderful. Enjoy! (Especially you, Ali!)

Film Posters: Black Swan

These film posters for the film Black Swan are by London-based La Boca, and are so striking. I love the way they seem to combine Communist-style red, white and black iconography with the bird image - so arresting.

Keith Loutit: Bathtub IV

This video is by Keith Loutit and is an example of time-lapse, tilt-shift photography: all those little miniature-looking people are real people! Just love it (And the very hum-able song is by the fabulous Megan Washington).

Glow Stick Animation

This is so beautiful. The animation (yes, animation!) technique involves a team of animators "painting in the air with glow sticks, frame after frame to create entire sequences of animation, usually taking a whole night to shoot".

Mind blowingly beautiful.

Autumn Story Chalkboard Animation

Well this makes my heart race a little faster. A most whimsical and compelling chalkboard animation illustrated by Lucinda Schreiber and co-directed by Yanni Kronenberg. The hauntingly lovely music is from the Firekites' album 'The Bowery' and is called 'Autumn Story'.

Seaweed Arms

Love this (very) short film and music - kind of amazing.

Words

WORDS from Everynone on Vimeo.

One of my favourite podcasts, Radiolab, recently featured this beautiful short film about words, noise and nature. I know, I've been blogging a lot about short films lately - I don't know why - but this one's a keeper. I should warn you - this isn't 100% worksafe (a split second is a bit risque), so please be careful when and where you play it.

Oh, and it's my birthday today, so I feel like I can be totally self-indulgent! Hope you enjoy the Words!

It's (Not That) Complicated

OK, so I watched It's Complicated the other night, and while it wasn't the Best Movie Ever, it was styled super well. Check out the beautiful kitchen and garden. Not really my style - I could never live with that much beige - but it was so pretty and practical-looking. The only irritating part was that part of the film focussed on Meryl Streep wanting to 'build the kitchen she's always wanted' - whaaa?!

This is Where We Live

This Is Where We Live from 4th Estate on Vimeo.

This is a gorgeous, stop-motion short film about the publisher 4th Estate. Beautifully crafted - so much lovely attention to detail. Thanks to Ali for the heads-up on this one!

Whedon-Love

I have written before about how much I love Joss Whedon's filmmaking. This beautiful image is inspired by the series Firefly (which was later followed up with the film Serenity) and it is just superb. If you haven't seen the series, just find it. Now.

Beached Az: Pelican

It's been a while since I wrote about Beached Az - the very clever mini animation series by some of my close friends. This episode, with a flamboyant and fickle pelican, is one of my all-time favourites.
